It’s time to think about having a better life.
Being satisfied with your life is different from being happier.
Nobel Memorial Prize winner in Economic Sciences (Daniel Kahneman,2002) explains the two pretty well:
Happiness is being happy in the moment in your life and we experience it immediately. Satisfied in your life is being happy about your life. It is the happiness that exists when we talk about our life from the past to this moment en in later.
How could we not just be happy at the moment but being satisfied with our lives? Research says there are five things that make difference for us:
- Keep growing
Not in size of your body but in your mind.
People over the age of 30-40 who identify at least one change in their viewpoints or their behavior in recent months are more likely to feel hopeful about the future and more likely to say they are generally in a good mood. Keep asking yourself what changes have you seen in what you believe over the past few months?
Keep learning about topics that interested you, no matter how old you are. People over the age of fifty who continued to learn something interesting are more likely to feel satisfied with their life and to feel vital. But keep in mind don’t try to change everything. Maintaining strong core values are important. Willingness to compromise on unimportant matters is associated with significantly more positive social relations.
- Have goals
If you have goals in your life, you are 20 percent more satisfied and 26 percent more likely to feel positive about yourself. It is not necessary to have a very big goal in your life. A consistent amount of minor success produces much more satisfaction than occasionally bagging an elephant.
The important thing is not to give up, try to continue till you reach the goal. The capacity of continue trying is associated with likely 42 percent more life satisfaction.
- Money is not the answer
The more materialistic people are, the less satisfied they are with their lives. People with a modest income who feel there is meaning in their lives twice as likely to be satisfied as were people who were wealthier with lack of a sense of meaning in their lives. Does have the life meaning for you?
- Have a life story
People who write about the history of their lives, people who are interested in their family and ethnic histories, children who know the stories of those who came before them are more likely to feel satisfied with their lives. The more children know about their family’s history, the stronger their sense of control over their lives.
Research shows having a better social life, having more close friendship can be worth as much as an additional $131,232 a year in terms of life satisfaction. Like your neighbors, making a good social network. A group of 10 supportive friends seems to be the magic number.
Research says religious people are happier because they feel connected to a community of like-minded people.
